Aquaculture Department

The Aquaculture Department is one of the key technical divisions within the General Authority for Fisheries in the Arabian Sea.
It is dedicated to the development and expansion of fish farming and aquaculture projects across the coastal governorates of the Republic of Yemen.
The department aims to enhance national food security and diversify sources of income by promoting investment in marine and freshwater aquaculture, while introducing modern technologies and sustainable practices to local farmers and fishermen.

Department Objectives

  • Increase fish production through the establishment of sustainable pilot and commercial aquaculture projects.
  • Promote aquaculture awareness among fishermen, investors, and local communities.
  • Provide fish fry and fingerlings to local farms and offer technical and biological support.
  • Improve the quality of farmed species using advanced nutrition and breeding techniques.
  • Conduct scientific research and studies on native species suitable for aquaculture and their environmental requirements.
  • Contribute to the protection of natural fish stocks by reducing pressure on traditional marine fisheries.

Main Functions and Objectives

The department oversees several programs related to fish, crustacean, and mollusk farming, with core activities that include:

 

  • Developing and implementing national strategies and action plans for aquaculture growth in coordination with national and international partners.
  • Establishing model hatchery stations to produce fry for key species such as tilapia, emperor bream, and grouper.
  • Monitoring private fish farms to ensure compliance with health and environmental standards.
  • Organizing training courses and workshops for professionals and investors in the aquaculture sector.
  • Collaborating with research centers and universities to conduct applied studies and pilot experiments on new species with aquaculture potential.
